Dean Armstrong KC is internationally recognised as one of the United Kingdom’s leading King’s Counsel in cyber law, digital assets, artificial intelligence, data protection and complex commercial disputes. An award-winning barrister, he advises governments, multinational corporations, financial institutions, technology businesses and high-net-worth individuals on some of the most significant litigation, regulatory and advisory matters involving emerging technologies worldwide.
Recognised by Chambers & Partners (Band 1), Legal 500 (Tier 1) and Forbes, he is widely regarded as one of the UK’s foremost specialists in cyber law, blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies and digital asset disputes. His practice regularly encompasses high-value and precedent-setting matters at the intersection of law, technology and innovation.
Called to the Bar in 1985, he initially practised in corporate finance before becoming one of the earliest advocates to specialise in technology-related legal issues. Today, his practice remains at the forefront of developments in cyber law, digital assets, artificial intelligence and data regulation, advising clients across multiple jurisdictions.
This combination of courtroom advocacy, strategic advisory expertise and deep technical understanding is central to Dean’s practice. Clients regularly seek his advice where disputes or regulatory matters involve novel technology, international dimensions or substantial commercial risk.
His experience includes advising a broad range of governments, multinational organisations and major financial institutions, with clients including Barclays Bank, the Bank of England and Vodafone. He has also worked with representatives of the Governments of Pakistan, Bermuda and Slovakia on matters relating to blockchain technology, cryptocurrency and digital asset regulation.
His international experience also includes advisory work in Dubai, while his current practice encompasses cross-jurisdictional data issues, blockchain businesses, digital asset disputes and matters involving London Stock Exchange listings.
Beyond his work as an advocate, Dean is recognised as a leading contributor to the development of law and regulation in emerging technology sectors. He was consulted by the UK Law Commission on reforms that formed part of the Data Protection Act 2018 and is the only UK lawyer sponsored by an international government to participate in drafting the Travel Rule framework for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).
